Update on EOS 6D+24-105mm for $1899 Unauthorized Dealer via eBay

A couple days ago we posted a EOS 6D + 24-105mm deal for $1899 at unauthorized dealer “BestStopDeals” via eBay.

We can now report back based on initial reader reports from the twelve readers (thus far) who have already received their purchases and contacted us.

  • Everyone received a brand new EOS 6D (including Wifi and GPS) as well as a brand new 24-105mm lens.
  • Most people reported receiving a Canon USA and Canada warranty card. This is good!
  • Unfortunately two readers (thus far) reported not receiving any warranty card at all.
  • No “International Warranty Cards” seen yet.

UPDATE: I spoke to the owner of BestStopDeals by phone today. He explained that the confusion on Tuesday was caused by a new customer service rep who did not answer the questions about the warranty cards correctly. The owner gave me his assurances that all the bodies sold in this deal were brand new Canon USA models and were fully eligible for the Canon USA warranty. Most boxes will have the Canon USA warranty card, however, as we explain in our article, some may have been removed by the original authorized dealer. As we note in our article you don’t need the warranty card for service (just the receipt) but the warranty card is often a good proof of Canon USA status.

I am quite satisfied by his explanation, and the initial reports from readers who have received US models mostly with USA warranty cards corroborates his explanation. Any customer who is not satisfied is welcome to contact the store, or you can contact me and I can help relay the message. He also notes the store will back the Canon USA warranty should there be any issues — but we’re always here for you if you need us.

The deal is still live for one more day.

UPDATE 2: See reader comments on this blog post for pictures & reports of receiving Japanese model bodies with no warranty cards (just copies of US warranty term cards that DO NOT BELONG in Japanese model boxes).

If you purchase something through a link on our site, we may get a small share of the sale (at no cost to you). Please read our disclosure for more info.

CPW, thanks for the follow up… I’d been following this site for a long time and it used to be just a view and go page. Now there’s actually dialogue and valuable information, especially you are extending your services to us reader.

Thanks so much. Keep it up.

So how about the lens? I have asked questions via email on the “USA model” and “imported model” plus whether Canon 1 yr limited warranty was a USA warranty as well as the warranty coverage on lens, the answer from the store was “Canon 6D/24-105 camera is USA model ” but no comments on the warranty.

I am told by the owner that both body and lens have a full Canon warranty and are US model. I had a long chat with him today.

CPW…thanks so much! After reading this, I just purchased the kit! Can’t wait to get it, I’ll let you know what happens. Thanks again for going above and beyond for your followers!

This is so great to read! Thank you CPW!! I ordered mine on Wed night, it’s not shipped yet so I will be a nervous wreck until the camera is in my hands!!

I just got mine delivered and it did not come with a warranty card or the instruction booklets. Not that i need the booklets but just odd not included. appears a few stickers had been removed from the boxes as well.

How is your camera look like, brand new? With wi-fi and gps?

  6. May 25, 2014 at 1:53 am EDT

Damn and I cancelled my order :/

Received my camera yesterday. Original box, no warranty card at all in the box. Only one manual. Clearly not a US model and no warranty card of any kind. This looks could be Japanese market version.

Uh oh. Can you mention what shows it was clearly not a US model? (Language on box, default language of firmware?)

Open an eBay case and/or contact the store. If you need to escalate it please contact me and I’ll get you in touch with the store owner.

I’m getting nervous, Still no sign that the seller shipped it. Unless they don’t bother updating their info when they send things out. It’s estimated delivery date is tomorrow (Wed)

I’ve noticed they’ve had some bad reviews about their poor communication and that they don’t ship on time and a few people stated that when they inquired about their order that it was canceled. I am afraid to contact them until after estimated delivery date.

I order wed night and received tracking number after calling them. Try calling them, it may speed things up.

Camera arrived. Got a Japanese version. No USA warranty card. The box was in Japanese. The battery was in Japanese as well. I noticed a JP at the end of the battery/charger model number.

Ugh. I am going to call the store owner and see what he has to say about this.

No answer to my phone call; I’ve left an e-mail.

I would start by contacting the store yourself and asking them what’s up with this as they have been telling everyone this was US model.

Funny how right after purchase, I sent them a message and they said there’s a USA warranty for the item.

Odd, Japanese box, but isn’t that a US & Canada warranty card there?!

Does the serial number on the warranty card match the body?

[EDIT: Wait, that’s not a warranty card, it just looks like a copy of the warranty terms… warranty card should look like this:

        May 29, 2014 at 7:33 pm EDT

No warranty card. Just the terms.

        1. CanonPriceWatch
          May 29, 2014 at 7:46 pm EDT

Normally the terms are attached to the warranty card as part of a large perforated sheet. For example, look at the warranty card on the far right of this photo:

          http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/ufiles/28/700228.jpg

What might have happened here is, someone detached the “warranty terms” portion of a USA warranty card, and placed this sheet into a grey market box, I suppose with the expectation that the purchaser wouldn’t know that this wasn’t an actual warranty card (it does say “Canon USA and Canada Limited Warranty” on it, which is confusing).

Now, I don’t know who this was done by. This doesn’t seem like the right thing to do though.

After going through several tests with the camera, I feel this camera set is a keeper. It’ll be a bit risky though since I still have a year to use it before it is treated the same as other Canon cameras that are out of warranty.

Suppose I do return this and go for a set from an authorized dealer, there’s a possibility of getting a lemon…

    Decisions, decisions, decisions….

However, you do bring up a good point. I believe someone may have gotten the warranty terms from a US “returned” model and stuffed it in the grey market box to make it seem as a US model. Tricky tricky…. Well I have about 45 days to play with it and see if anything goes wrong; ebay allows us to file disputes within a 45-day window.

      May 29, 2014 at 9:49 pm EDT

I really don’t like what’s happened here, especially given what I was told on the phone.

BTW, a second reader has e-mailed me some photographic proof of more similar shenanigans. I’ve e-mailed my new contacts at this store and am waiting for a reply. I will update you when I hear back.

Quite a decision for you now. If you choose to keep it, feel free to register with us for our “warranty”.

      http://www.canonpricewatch.com/blog/2014/05/woes-with-beststopdeals-so-cpw-will-give-you-a-warranty/

The last few data points I have, readers have been successful sending even import bodies in for Canon USA warranty service. I’d say it’s not guaranteed though, so if they do reject you please feel free to come to us and we’ll help if you register with us now.

I would love to register for that warranty, but I purchased this on the 21st, not the 20th. -Sigh-

      2. May 30, 2014 at 7:33 pm EDT

I called them directly as well and was assured that these were US cameras, no grey market and that they all had warranties. I decided to trust them and go for it.

          May 30, 2014 at 7:37 pm EDT

Yeah, this is unfortunate as this is what they told me as well. I am waiting for them to reply to my emails. I’ll probably post loudly about this if they don’t explain themselves soon.

  12. May 30, 2014 at 8:46 am EDT

I received my camera yesterday, like Will’s situation, only with a page of warranty term but not warranty card. The box and battery are fine, not in Japanese.

I ordered it from your referral on 20th, but it was placed in the night, can I register for your warranty program?

    Thanks!

i received mine today (ordered on the first day of the deal announced). it is brand new usa model with a canon warranty card. thanks CPW!

  14. May 30, 2014 at 6:09 pm EDT

Finally got mine today after ordering on the 21st. It’s like Will’s the box is Japanese and there’s just the warranty terms no warranty card anywhere!! UGH! Looks like it’s luck of the draw with them. Everything looks great and brand new though. I have been through the wringer with trying to get a 6d so I am going to keep this and take my chances. :/

Thanks CPW for all your help on this!

I got fed up with being lied to about the US models, as well as not getting any replies from the store, so I’ve made a scathing main page post about this incident.

I used this camera ONE time and it is now NOT WORKING AT ALL!! OMFG!! I am going to lose it! I was one of the ones without the warranty card as well!! I cannot believe this is happening to me!!!

Open an eBay item not as described case immediately (reason: camera not working). You have a 45 day window from your payment of order.

Then contact the seller and let them know the item is defective, and ask for a return, including a prepaid return label.
