Breaking News: Canon Price Drop Tomorrow on 26 Lenses

This is exciting: we have just now heard that Canon is instituting a “permanent” price drop on 26 lenses tomorrow, Sunday, August 31st.

If you bought a lens that was recently on rebate, don’t worry, you already got the better deal — for most lenses, the recent post-rebate prices were better than the new prices. For a couple lenses (notably the 24-70 II and 70-200 II) the price drop ($200) is equal to the rebate — effectively making it permanent. The best deals are on super-telephotos that weren’t on rebate — a $700 to $1000 price drop! You can see the full list below.

As for street prices? For lenses not currently on rebate, we expect street prices to drop! We will need a few days to get more clarity on what level the street prices will fall to, so we will disable street prices on all affected lenses. Please stay tuned, street prices will be back next week!

Another likely benefit of the price drop would be a reduction in the refurbished price, as refurbished prices are usually pegged at 80% of the MAP price.

A reminder, there is also a new mail-in rebate on 5D Mark III and 6D starting tomorrow. For the list of price drops (including both old and new MAP) please read more.

Please stay tuned for new street prices! If you are not familiar with our street prices, which is a great way to get a deal on a Canon lens or body from a Canon authorized dealer, you can read our FAQ about street prices.

If you purchase something through a link on our site, we may get a small share of the sale (at no cost to you). Please read our disclosure for more info.

We had a slight typo in our list — sorry, it’s now been fixed. The prices are correct now.

I haven’t really needed it, but have had it sitting in an online shopping cart for a few months. That slight mistype on the Extender EF 1.4x III ($50 drop vs $200 drop that was originally posted) kinda crapped on my morning. 🙂

Yeah, sorry about that typo. Was in a rush. Was too excited.

The $500 price drop on the 24-70 F4L IS USM lens is crazy.

    1. August 30, 2014 at 11:55 am EDT

It was way overpriced at $1499. $1000 is in-line with what the 5D Mark III + 24-70 Kit sells for vs. the 5D Mark III body.

By the way, the 5D Mark III + 24-70 Kit is also dropping by $150.

Wow – the drop on the 24-70 f/4 is huge!

Any thoughts on dropping the 100-400?

The 100-400L isn’t included in this price drop. That’s all we know.

I need a wide angle lens

I recently bought the newest Canon wide angle lens, the 16-35 f4 IS, and would recommend it highly. It is much sharper corner to corner than the 17-40 f4 (which I traded in) or 16-35 f2.8 (from everything I’ve read) and the I’m finding the IS to be very useful. I thought the lens was very reasonably priced relative to other Canon L lenses (like the 24-70 f2.8 II) and apparently Canon agrees as they didn’t cut the $1199 retail price. The fact that the 16-35 f4 IS takes 77mm filters (which I already owned) instead of 82mm was a big plus for me.

I think most of the lenses on the price cut list were overpriced and this is a welcome step toward sanity.

Maybe this will be the year that I snag a 5DIII kit. Oct-Dec had some great price drops from authorized dealers. We’re about a month away from the fun quarter!

With MAP I’m not sure we’ll see the same frenzy this year but I would be happy to be wrong! We’ll have the street prices at least, but street prices will never be as good as true open competition.

Any chance some of these lenses will show up with rebates on top of the upcoming price drops come this holiday season? Definitely excited to see movement on prices, but I’m hoping that Canon won’t do this in lieu of rebates for the holidays. You said on a post a few days ago that the next time for rebates would likely be in October. I know that’s just a guess, but your guess is much better than mine! Just curious if I missed my chance at some of these lenses with rebates or if we’ll see a price drop and rebate during the holidays. Thanks!

My guess is we’ll still see some rebates but the value may be reduced. e.g. 70-200 II was $300 rebate. After the $200 price drop the rebate will probably be only $100? It’s much better than waiting on a huge $300 rebate though.

I want to see a price drop on the 200mm f/2L IS

    1. August 31, 2014 at 4:26 am EDT

So do I, but I think that for the moment we will have to either keep dreaming of it or rent it as I do from time to time (actually I used to rent the 1.8 old lens, pity the shop sold it this summer)

Trying to get a lens before the rebates expire at cpw street price. how long does it take to get the return email?

Approximately 30 minutes, as I just replied. 🙂

Should we be on the lookout for possible double dips tonight, or probably not happening?

    1. CanonPriceWatch
      August 30, 2014 at 5:00 pm EDT

Not super likely, because the rebate that is ending is a mail in rebate. It only works the other way around when a instant is ending and a mail-in is starting 🙂

For the record, stacking this price drop with the current mail-in would still be higher than our street prices. e.g. $200 drop and $200 MIR on 70-200 II is $2099 but our street price was $2019.

Adorama and Profeel are two stores now showing the new pricing.

The Canon Direct Store made a new page to promote the price drops — hilariously there is an error in their system and they made all the lenses drop to a price of $0.00. Someone has already gone through and purchased all the free lenses! http://bit.ly/VWZwN1

only $40 on my next purchase; the 135L? oh pooey :,(

Hi, I wonder if the current 400mm f/4 DO IS lens will have a price drop, too. I am asking because I heard a canon rumour about a new version of that lens announced soon (maybe at Photokina this September

  18. August 31, 2014 at 9:44 am EDT

You know that $0 isn’t going to hold and the orders won’t be filled.

    1. August 31, 2014 at 9:50 pm EDT

I’m sure they will cancel all those orders.
