A Surprising Tip for Getting More Money for your PIXMA PRO-100

With all the great PIXMA PRO-100 bundles lately, many readers are asking how much you can expect to get from selling their PIXMA PRO-100. The answer (no surprise) is not much, if you’re trying to sell the entire printer. That’s because the heavy weight of the printer (50+ pounds) makes it very cost-prohibitive to ship, and your local market may not be large enough to sustain a steady sale of the printer.

Luckily, there are consumable components of the printer that represent most of the value of the printer. As a plus, they’re small and easy to ship, so you can take advantage of a larger market. The print head fetches about $70 when still sealed (eBay Completed Sales, Amazon Listings), and the full ink tanks fetch about $90-$100 (eBay Completed Sales). After shipping and seller fees, you can expect to net $120-$130 for these printer parts. As long as you’re willing to deal with the mail-in rebate and the time to list, sell, and ship your parts, printer bundle deals are some of the best ways to save on Canon gear.

UPDATE: Some readers have asked if the PIXMA PRO-100 comes with full ink cartridges or “starter” ink. It comes with full ink cartridges. This has been well-studied by weighing full and empty cartridges; the “with printer” cartridges are identical in weight (before and after) to retail cartridges.

Any other tips for fellow readers? Put them in the comments below!

Another Idea, list the entire printer whole but ship it worldwide. A PIXMA Pro-100 new from a big box stores in Australia is still twice as much as buying one off eBay and paying a fortune for postage.

Great idea. Yes, listing it whole and “buyer pays shipping” might work for international sales.

I had a 2nd one from a rebate situation a while back and it was a major pain to unload it. I had to eventually sell it locally for next to nothing. All attempts to sell it online, ebay, Amazon CL were met with crickets.

You’re doing it wrong. I sold around 30 Pro-9000 MKII’s and 20 Pro-100’s/Pro-10’s. I never got less than $140, and averaged around $170 for the Pro-9000 MKII’s and $180 for the Pro-100’s. When I learned I could get the same or more money from selling components separately for less hassle (approximately 1 1/2 years ago), I’ve averaged roughly $175 for the Pro-100 and just toss the rest of the package at a free county recycling center.

Ink is currently in demand and you can get $110-120 for the ink currently + $60-70 for the Printhead (I’ve done this 3 times in past 3 months). You can get an additional $5-6 from the cables and $5-6 from the instruction manual + CD. I have never had an issue getting rid of the items on eBay. If you are lucky enough to get in on a Pro-10 deal, the best route is then Amazon. Craigslist is a waste of time with how saturated the market became over the past 5-7 years and with the increase in print services from stores.

Twice this year I was able to snag a PRO-100 for $50 after rebate. I enjoy using my PRO-100, but its cheaper to get a whole new printer than buy replacement inks!

Donate to local school or community college and write off full retail price.

My local CC has some of the finest Epson printers you can buy, I ended up selling mine to a student there though for $40.

Any chance of a deal on the PRO-10 like you had a couple weeks ago?

      Haven’t seen anything since…

The inks that come with the printer in my experience are not full inks. Can’t really compare that to sales of new complete ink cartridges.

For the PIXMA PRO-100, they absolutely are full inks (not starters). This has been confirmed by many — one of the most compelling arguments is someone who weighed the full vs. empty cartridges and found them the same as the full retail cartridges.

The completed sales on eBay where you don’t see the retail packaging are people selling inks stripped from PIXMA PRO-100.

Slightly off topic – I have a bundle with PRO-100 (get $350 rebate) and stand-alone PRO-10 ($250 rebate). I can return the PRO-10 for a full refund or keep it and sell the PRO-100. I would need to recover $150 from the PRO-100 sale to make this a zero sum game. Recommendations?
