8TB WD External Hard Drive for $159 at Best Buy — Can Extract!

Best Buy has the WD easystore 8TB External USB 3.0 for only $159.99. This is a fantastic price for a 8 TB harddrive. You also get a free voucher for Shutterfly — either $20 off any purchase, or a free 8×8 photo book.

This deal is especially popular because WD appears to be using 8 TB Western Digital “Red” hard drives inside these external drive enclosures. Instructions are available on how to extract the drive from the enclosure. This is a fantastic deal as the Western Digital “Red” hard drives (suitable for NAS) typically go for about $265, making this about a $100 savings over buying the drive itself.

It didn’t let me get the free shutterfly stuff. Said I had to remove it from my cart while checking out.

You needed to login with a best buy account. I had that issue at 1st. Logged into my best buy account, and tried again, no issue.

Ahh ok. Well it wasn’t any big deal to me since I do practically all my printing at home.

    What does “can extract” mean?

  3. July 23, 2017 at 11:51 pm EDT

Oh, I bet you are referring to breaking open the case and “extracting” the drive! LOL

Interesting…. if I didn’t have a 4 and 5 tb model of the same drive, and a Seagate 5 tb, I’d spring for that. I have plenty of internal drives at this time. including two Seagates with 128 mb of cache. They’re quite fast, I’ve noticed.

Changed my mind. I ordered two….. if I decide I don’t really need them, I could probably extract the drives and sell them for close to $200!!

As someone who just shipped off a WD drive for data recovery…don’t do it. I know all hard drives have their issues, but WD drives are encrypted so if the USB-SATA board dies, you’ve got a big issue.

That’s why I guess it’s a good for nas. You take it out and use it

I’ve had far worse luck with Seagate. Literally every single Seagate drive I’ve ever owned has died, and this has been the experience over the last 15 years. A few months ago, I threw out a stack of 5-6 dead Seagate drives. I’m done with Seagate. While WDs do eventually die, I’ve found they last 2-3 years longer than Seagate.

Vince Oliverio I’ve had similar results..just had two seagates replaced under warranty…

Buy 2 so you can a copy of your data, all drives die, and 8tb drive deaths would be a huge problem

    WD external drives suck!!

Beware! I bought two of these at my local BB and was quite dismayed to open one of the enclosures only to find a Maxtor 80GB (yes, 80 GB!) HDD manufactured in October 2002. Thankfully they exchanged it with no hassle and even allowed me to open the replacement in the store to verify it contained the expected WD 8TB Red HDD.

Ugh. Must be someone scamming BB by buying the drive, swapping it, and returning it. Ugly.
