EOS 5D Mark IV with Canon Log Now Available for Preorder

The EOS 5D Mark IV with Canon Log is almost reality: we now see pre-order product listings for this upgraded EOS 5D Mark IV. It’s also available to pre-order at B&H Photo Video for $3599.00.

Recall that Canon also announced that the upgrade could be installed on existing EOS 5D Mark IV for $99 at a Canon service center. Because our street price is currently $3069 on the non-upgraded camera, it doesn’t make sense to purchase the Canon Log version for more than $3170 to $3220 (depending on how much you value your time and hassle).

Keep in mind also the cost to insure it shipping it. It cost us $155 to ship it to the center. With that said, really looking forward to the upgrade

What is the log people refer to? I can never get a straight answer as to why it is desired.

It sounds like it gives more contrast to video recording

It’s only really useful for video. It allows you to shoot as flat as possible. Shooting flat is useful if you plan to color correct in post. It will preserve more highlight and shadow details. If you google “why should I shoot video in log” you should find plenty more information.

Think of it like shooting in RAW but for video.

      What’s video? Kidding. But seriously.

    5. July 15, 2017 at 2:58 pm EDT

Log is a mixed bag. It records the video file more like how the sensor sees the data. Similar to a RAW file. It is an attempt to save all of the information in the whites and highlights that is normally just throw out in a normal gamma curve when compressing to jpeg or video file. But it does this at the expense of flattening the mids which can be a problem with the limited data rate of the 5d iv’s mjpeg codec when adding contrast during color correction. Noticeable color banding can result. Tl’dr: c-log protects highlights by letting the highlights take up a larger proportion of the gamma curve.

Or better yet, get the 6D mk II!

Doesn’t even have 4K. How is that ‘better yet’

Better off running a 5D3 w/ magic lantern

David Charles Clauss lol if you want video, get a camera built for video. The Canon 6D’s strength is Landscape and Astro. I have a Canon cinema line for video.

David Charles Clauss lol running Magic Lantern will do nothing to increase he output of the 5D3, change its weaker low light sensitivity than the 6 or modify the sensor. For landscapes and Astro 6 D will always out perform the 5 Dmk 3. I have both so it’s not a bias I’m speaking from.

I think he was refer to ML for video. ML on 5DMK3 can do full frame RAW if I recall.

I have a Canon log..it’s a Canon 24-105 that’s been repaired so many times I just quit using it.

The 24-105 is possibly the worst “pro” lens canon makes. Soft images, slow to focus…there is a reason it comes as a kit lens.

    3. July 14, 2017 at 9:20 am EDT

Disagree. It is actually a great lens for many things ( except for lowlight). Most pictures in my portfolio are taken by it. I own a good number of L glasses yet it is still my favorite. http://www.thiennguyenphotography.com

I ve seen great work shot with the 18-55 it’s not about the gear although it surely helps

    5. July 15, 2017 at 3:03 am EDT

I love the 24-105 as well. Sure it could be a lot better but I just find the focal length so usable in so many situations that it’s likely my most used lens.

    6. July 15, 2017 at 10:23 pm EDT

I dislike my 24-105mm also. No idea how they get away calling it an L lens. Soft images, crappy focus, just blah. Maybe I just got a bad one… Feels like a knockoff company made it.
