Street Price on Sony Alpha a7II: $1399 from Authorized Dealer

We’re slowly expanding our street price program into non-Canon items. Our newest addition to the program is the Sony Alpha a7II, a very popular full-frame mirrorless camera with a 24mp Exmor CMOS sensor. It’s available at a street price of $1399, brand new from an authorized Sony dealer (with a 1-year Sony USA warranty.) Compare with the regular price of $1698.

Sony mirrorless cameras are very popular amongst Canon shooters, as the Metabones Adapter allows you to pair Canon’s best-in-class lenses with the Sony’s popular high dynamic range sensor. It’s a best of both worlds, especially for landscape or stills shooters who are willing to tolerate the loss of autofocus speed from using the adapter.

How to get only canon and related accessory alerts in mail?

Agreed! Canon and canon related products only. Also, 9 out of 10 posts of late have been “Street Price”. Under fair disclosure, what kind of kick back are you getting from the Street Price vendor?

@Mike Smith – Who are you, the CPW police? No one is obligated to provide information to you regarding a “kick back.” This is a free service and much appreciated. I’ve been able to make a couple of purchases through the Street Price outlet and have been very satisfied with the prices and the service. No one is forcing you to come to the CPW site.

Mike Smith, you’re a jerk. If you can get a better deal via CPW than you can on your own, why is it any of your business what kind of compensation (i.e. “kickback”, to use your snide term) CPW gets?

@ Mike Smith, if you do not like the street price you are free to go elsewhere. I personally love this website and the street price, and purchased several canon lenses. Every time the price was real and the service is fantastic. It is your call to choose other vendor, not other reasonable customers…

I agree, give him a break. This site is a valuable service to people. Canon is a great brand, but many Canon users also buy and use other brands and appreciate the discounts and info very much. Besides, this Sony A7II can be used with Canon lenses via an adapter. It won’t give great AF, but at least you can mount a Canon lens on it. The new Sony will AF better with Canon than this one, but still not perfect. The 2 newest Sonys are the only way you can make your Canon 50mm, 85mm, 135mm and 200mm primes image stabilized. Anyway, Canon users also use Sony, Leica, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax, etc. I hope people can see beyond their own personal needs and appreciate when something helps others.

P.S. This Sony will also work with all of the old Canon FD lenses and Canon rangefinder lenses via adapters. So that’s another benefit to some Canon users.

I just want to say that gordon you are awesome! as an avid photographer I don’t know what i would do without cpw. just a request but is there anyway you could please include the new sony a7r ii when it becomes more available? also its kinda strange there isn’t a sony price watch website since there is a nikon price watch? It is cool how you can use the sony cameras with canon gear.

Why? Please create a standard photographypricewatch or anyothernamepricewatch page, several of us are following (and buying) strictly canon products via notifications and more. Please take it into consideration. Thanks

Will the Sony (with adapter) provide IS for all Canon lenses? For instance, if I mount my 50/1.2L, will the internal Sony IS still work?

  9. Z
    August 21, 2015 at 3:50 pm EDT

@Steven Gruber, Yes, the Sony with adapter will provide IS for any lens as long as there is an adapter for it. That includes the 50/1.2L. The IS is in the camera body. There is a menu where you tell the camera which focal length you are using. It’s probably not as good as in-lens IS on long telephoto lenses, but it can still be a help with any lens. The A7II and the A7RII are the only FF cameras with this feature. (Olympus EM1 has it too, but it is m43, so 50mm is very cropped.) However, only the newer, more expensive A7RII has good AF with Canon lenses, and only with a $400 version 4 Metabones adapter, and only post-2006 lenses, and not even all of them. So there are a lot of qualifiers for AF. But the IS will work with any lens and with even a cheap adapter.

Wow, I didn’t expect such a debate to erupt from this post. First, thank you to everyone for voicing their thoughts and their feedback. Also, a special thanks to those with kind words of support. I really appreciate it.

This post was a bit of an experiment to see if CPW readers were interested in complementary gear such as Sony mirrorless cameras. From the reaction I can tell there are some people who are very interested, and others not so. We’ll have to figure out what the best way of moving forward is. Street price has been extremely popular and we do intend to continue to expand it, to broaden the array of items on which readers can save money, but I can understand it starts to dilute the focus of the site.

Regarding Mike’s specific question — we love to help our readers save money — helping someone save money is a fantastic feeling! We spend lots of time researching deals, writing posts, working on the price spiders and price engine, negotiating deals, personally replying to every single street price inquiry, answering questions about Canon products, deals, rebates, sales — all of this wouldn’t be possible without the support from our readers via affiliate links. We disclose on our about page the use of affiliate links as a means of supporting this site. When you make a purchase through a link from this site, a small amount is given to us by the store. We don’t display annoying, flashy banner ads; we don’t beg for donations; just the affiliate links — and thank you for your support!

Thanks for all you do, CPW! I have been very impressed with the prices and service of the Street Price program, and will continue to use it. Keep up the great work!

Gordon, I wouldn’t worry about diluting the focus of the site. You’ve been going beyond Canon products for quite a while with Sigma and Tamron lenses, memory cards, photo backpacks, Adobe processing software, etc. There are a lot of people with Canon lenses who have interest in Sony cameras, either to replace a Canon or to supplement one or more Canon cameras.

While I currently own nothing but Canon camera bodies and lenses, I can’t imagine why anybody other than a Canon employee wouldn’t want to see offers on non-Canon photographic products and services.

Some people will whine about anything, particularly on the internet.

Gordon, this is my first buy through CPW. I am member of CPS and have a significant investment in Canon hardware. That does not mean I do not appreciate a tool from another vendor. I do appreciate a value and I hope this purchase expands my toolset. Thanks for providing this service.

  13. August 21, 2015 at 6:12 pm EDT

Thank you for adding the Mirrorless category! I have been heavily leaning towards the A7II lately, so I was *so* excited to see this addition, thank you! 🙂

LMAO kickback? Do you represent all the CPW users? I’m glad to see more Sony mirrorless street prices in the future since they do have some fancy cameras now and I do not have such religion to “strictly stick with Canon” lol

  15. August 21, 2015 at 11:19 pm EDT

Let’s see a street price on A7S please

  16. August 21, 2015 at 11:28 pm EDT

I visit this site daily. And I support the addition of more camera brands. Everybody wins! We get to buy for less. CPW get a little monetary support. And the vendor gets some much needed sales. What’s not to love!

Great site. Great service. Great idea to expand to other brands.

I know there is a Nikon price watch site but it hasn’t been updated in a while. The street price page links back to this site. Any plans to include any Nikon equipment in street price program?

Thanks again to the author of this site for all of the hard work.

  20. August 23, 2015 at 8:29 pm EDT

    Love my A7ii

  21. August 23, 2015 at 11:41 pm EDT

How much auto focus speed is lost? Enough to nix it if shooting children?

  22. August 24, 2015 at 2:24 am EDT

Do not try to use adapted Canon lenses on Sony bodies unless you are using an A7Rii. Some older Canon lenses may not work, please Google what works best.

Native Zeiss lenses work best on the newer A7 bodies, there are some good Sony lenses too such as the 28mm f2. Check out Brian Smith’s website to see which adapters to get for lenses, especially if you have or plan on using faster A mount lenses.

Phottix, Nissin, and Sony have flashes that use the MIS interface for HSS flashes, recommended if you use OCF (as you should be). It is possible to use Yongnuo flashes or other manual flashes/triggers as long as they use the ISO center pin hotshoe.

Sony has great cons such as amazing viewfinder, 3 or 5 axis IBIS, zebra striping, manual focus assist, no micro adjustments for lenses, high resolution if you need to crop a bit, and many helpful FB groups if you get stuck or need help or critiques.

Some cons are battery life, no touch screen, native Zeiss lenses are expensive but amazing. FE lens stable is small but growing.

Have fun! (No matter what you shoot!)
