After two long weeks with zero changes in Canon prices at authorized dealers (not even “add-to-cart” discounts), a dealer has finally made a move: Best Buy lowered the price on the Canon EOS 6D by $200 in-cart to $1699.99, and similarly on the Canon EOS 6D with 24-105 Kit by $200 in-cart to $2299.99.
This is fantastic. Not because of the prices, but because it looks like finally there may be some push-back against a supposed strict MAP policy. Recall, we reported that stores were not advertising lower prices (not even in-cart) for fear of repercussions, such as not having their orders filled or their authorized dealer status revoked.
We are watching to see if other stores follow, or if Best Buy is forced to step back in line…
[Update: Best Buy prices shot back up today to MAP. Does not bode well… ]
This will be interesting. Thanks and keep us posted! (BTW, there just seems to be something inherently wrong with MAP from an ethical point of view.)
I’ve been holding off on purchasing a 6D 24-105 kit for a while (missed the deal earlier this month for $1950). How likely is it that we see a similar deal within the next month or so?
Really hard to say. It depends on many factors, like if stores will break MAP. Those deals were a bit special because they were eBay frenzy deals, which lets stores price even more aggressively than normal.
At this time I’d guess the chance of seeing $1950 within the next month is slim.
I see. What’s the benefit of buying from an authorized vs non-authorized dealer?
You can read this article for the details:

i just bought it for 2274.89
There are unauthorized dealers selling the 6D + 24-105 for as low as $2194. The price is not the point though — we are happy to see some movement on prices at authorized dealers.
yes look nice!! but i just bought it for $2280 (include kit lens) since last Monday by told them to match the price with other site 🙂
What’s weird is I imagine canon gets the same wholesale price whether a company sells at map or on sale. This is just reducing the units canon is selling. I doubt canon gives a wholesale discount when companies choose to have sales. Instant rebates and mail in are likely funded by canon
Canon gets the same wholesale price, but gives further wholesale discounts depending on volume. They are probably much happier to sell an even number to all stores at low discount rather than having a few very powerful stores (getting a huge discount) controlling the market. They also want all stores (even the smaller ones) to have a healthy margin so they choose to sell Canon products instead of other brands.
By the way, instant rebates are partially funded by the stores as Canon does not give them 100% of the rebate back.
Thanks for the info. Selling no cameras isn’t good for business though 😉
Awesome!
MAP is a stupid policy imo. Let the market/supply&demand determine the price
Regardless of semantics, MAP IMO is nothing less than price fixing which I find deplorable. While I realize this give smaller stores an even chance competition is what separates us from socialism.
That’s why I am not buying ANYTHING until the price is right. Waiting until things get reasonable.
I think a company is perfectly entitled to “fix” it’s own prices without setting us on a slippery slope toward socialism… I would much rather have a healthy network of big & small suppliers to generate competition than a small group of dominant chains. The dominant chains undercut the smaller businesses on price to grab as much market share as possible, then when the competition is decimated “fix” their own prices as high as they please.
Best Buy prices on the 6D are back up to MAP today.
Glad I jumped on it when I did last month. Adorama…6D + 24-105, Extra battery, 16GB class 10 Sand Disk, camera case, Canon Pro-100 + 50pk 13×19 paper. $1939 after $400 rebate ; )
I read in wiki that MAP is actually illegal in US..so how true is this? Canon can be in legal trouble if this is the case..
