EOS 5DS, 5DS R, T6i, T6s, and EF 11-24mm f/4L USM Announced

Canon just announced the following cameras and lens!

The EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R are the long-awaited 50MP+ full-frame DSLRs. It’s yet to be seen if the sensor technology is bought-in (e.g. Sony) or new Canon technology. At $3699 and $3899 with and without anti-alias filter, respectively, they are priced modestly (similar to where the 5D Mark III started out).

We’re excited to see the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM — hefty price at $2999 price tag, but apparently it’s designed to resolve pixel-sharp on the 50MP EOS 5DS. This one’s available by the end of the month.

Finally, two new rebels, the EOS Rebel T6i and the slightly up-market EOS Rebel T6s, the first rebel to feature an LCD top-plate.

Good thing I waited to get the 5d3

I wouldn’t trade my 5d3 for either of these cameras. Same sensor size, smaller inferior pixels on the new cameras will yield image quality and noise similar to the 7d2. Note that the maximum ISO on these cameras is less than either the 5d3 or 1DX. Canon gives in to the crowd that thinks more megapixels is always better. Margins on these new cameras have to be spectacular for Canon, because according to a 2006 Canon white paper the smaller megapixel sensors (which are less efficient at gathering light and showing fine color detail) are much less expensive to manufacture than the larger megapixel sensors of the 5d3 and 1DX.

Pure marketing gimmickry in my opinion.

3k$ for fisheye lens is way overpriced. Tokina 10-17 is only 600$ and is just as good.

    1. February 6, 2015 at 1:34 am EDT

      It’s not fisheye

    2. Brian
      February 7, 2015 at 12:15 am EDT

      It’s a rectilinear lens, not a fisheye.

Canon need to move into the mirrorless world quickly.

A 50+ MP camera is not exactly innovative.

I love my Canon gear, don’t get me wrong. But others are innovating while Canon are resting on their laurels.

Mirrorless camera that allows you to use your “L” glass would excite me. But I won’t be buying either of these new bodies. My 2 5D3’s and my 6D will suit me fine.

    1. February 6, 2015 at 1:55 am EDT

      I love my 6D

    2. February 6, 2015 at 2:12 am EDT

      As do I, Austin.

I would just love to see something new, fresh and innovative from Canon.

    3. February 6, 2015 at 2:41 am EDT

EOS M3 info was also released, but they didn’t show it in this post.

    4. February 6, 2015 at 2:49 am EDT

M3 won’t be available in the USA.

    5. February 6, 2015 at 2:52 am EDT

      Exactly.

Canon and Nikon both need to get away from only doing DSLR. They might be knocked down if they don’t.

    6. February 6, 2015 at 2:52 am EDT

^ thanks for the info. Thats too bad. 🙁 it looked really nice.

      February 6, 2015 at 10:47 am EDT

If you love mirrorless and think it’s the way to go, why are you still lugging around and shooting with the 5D3 and 6D?

    8. February 6, 2015 at 4:21 pm EDT

Canon seems to be about fooling the consumer making all the $’s they can off of them, and not on making good products.

      1. Don
        February 6, 2015 at 8:23 pm EDT

That’s ridiculous. Canon makes a lot of industry leading products, particularly lenses.

    9. February 6, 2015 at 8:09 pm EDT

      Canon only does DSLR what?

Canon not good products? Tell that to the mostly Canon sports shooters.

Yeah, I’ll take my camera advice from you people… uh huh…. SMH

    10. February 6, 2015 at 11:10 pm EDT

No 4k but still 4k! I’m cool with my mark iii’s too.

How many mirrorless cameras did you see on the sidelines at the Superbowl, or the World Cup? I counted zero. As with most things, you need the right tool for the right job. There is no one-size-fits-all camera. And the thought of using a big white on a mirrorless camera defeats the essence of what a mirrorless camera is supposed to be.

  4. February 6, 2015 at 1:01 am EDT

The t6i is the best deal

    1. February 6, 2015 at 2:50 am EDT

      Yes, it has WiFi too.

    2. February 6, 2015 at 5:27 pm EDT

If the T6i was full frame it would be the best camera out there

    3. February 6, 2015 at 5:51 pm EDT

So you’re saying the t6i would be better than a 1dx?

    4. February 6, 2015 at 6:01 pm EDT

Considering the price hell yeah….. I don’t even like the 1DX. That camera is way to loud for me…. Maybe if I shot sports but as a wedding shooter its just to loud.

  5. February 6, 2015 at 1:16 am EDT

Anyone know if there are any high ISO improvements in this new camera that would make me dump my 5D3 right now for this one? 50mp is nice but not enough to make me bail from my 5D3. I’m looking for more high ISO noise improvement first and foremost. tks

    1. February 6, 2015 at 1:36 am EDT

I’d expect worse high ISO performance than 5D3. Wait for the 5D4 if you want improved high ISO.

    2. February 6, 2015 at 1:36 am EDT

That’s what someone just told me as well, waiting for august. THank you

    3. February 6, 2015 at 4:58 am EDT

there’s a 5D4? so these models are just to stir some excitement? 🙂 I shoot mostly portraits and occasional landscape wonder if I should get these or the 5D3?

    4. February 6, 2015 at 4:30 pm EDT

5D3 or wait for to see what the 5D4 offers.

    5. February 6, 2015 at 7:29 pm EDT

All this confidence about a 5D4. What rumors are you all referring to? I wouldn’t go from 5D3 to 5Ds. But I would go from 5D2 to 5Ds.

A Big NO for me! Iso only 6400, they forgot about LOW LIGHT, Plus NO 4K and NO Mirrorless! Oh well let’s wait for the MK4 hope they do better because thats what we need, we dont really need a 50 megapixel camera and honestly we dont really need a 4k either and mayb not even a GPS, what we need a better camera in low light a better iso and course a price that don’t brake the bank! So again a big NO for the 5Ds

    1. February 6, 2015 at 10:22 am EDT

YOU may not need a 50mp body, but there are plenty of landscape and portrait shooters out there that will embrace this, and who rarely shoot higher than iso 800.

    2. February 6, 2015 at 10:25 am EDT

Oh well you mayb right but, in low ligth do may have idea how bad this camera will be? Just by the iso i can tell this camera sensor is really bad and as photographer a camera with this kinda money and not good for low light is a big No no?

    3. Don
      February 6, 2015 at 11:00 am EDT

The cameras with smaller megapixels (crop sensor bodies and these new ones) generate more heat and consequently have more noise and a lower ISO ceiling than the larger megapixel sensors in the 6D, 5D3 and 1DX. I think Canon decided that if people were going to keep whining about sensors with “only” 22 MPs and how great it was that Nikon has a 36MP body, they’d give people what they think they want and rake in huge profit margins on it. A larger version of a Rebel sensor in a $3500 camera? No thanks.

    4. February 6, 2015 at 12:25 pm EDT

Then don’t buy, simple as that!

    5. February 6, 2015 at 3:10 pm EDT

6400 ISO is simply a measure of digital gain that the camera can shoot at via software control. It is nothing to do with the noise floor nor how the camera resolves signal to noise. The 7D2 was a vast improvement over its predecessor and likewise we should expect to see improvement in the 5Ds over 5D3.

      1. Brian
        February 7, 2015 at 12:37 am EDT

Exactly! Everyone is assuming ISO 6400 is the same on the 5Ds vs. 5DM3.

    6. February 6, 2015 at 4:25 pm EDT

Come on photographers play it smart, you don’t need the next new thing, and 50mpixals! I agree we need better iso without noise better low light camera, and it does it all, sports, landscapes, night shooting, come on Canon, get with it.

    7. February 6, 2015 at 4:27 pm EDT

I Agree thats exactly what we need a better all in one camera

    8. February 6, 2015 at 4:27 pm EDT

BTW most landscape and portrait photographers shoot in low light as well and want a better low light camera, it is why the 5DmarkIII is still the best for this.

      1. Brian
        February 7, 2015 at 12:44 am EDT

Most serious landscape photographers use a tripod, especially in low light, so high ISO is not so important. Same thing for portrait photography, especially if you’re talking about studio portraits. Wedding photography, on the other hand, is another story. Subjects move and lighting isn’t always ideal. That’s where fast lenses and high ISO will help .

  10. February 6, 2015 at 9:27 am EDT

    Get a clue Canon! Overpriced!

  11. February 6, 2015 at 9:29 am EDT

Studio and maybe landscape work? Yes. Sports, wildlife, concerts, low-light shooting? Not so much. I’d like to see Canon up the dynamic range and improve high ISO performance in the next-generations of the 1Dx and 5DMarkIII. We wait until August…

    1. February 6, 2015 at 1:22 pm EDT

I really hope you’re right and this happens. This latest release is useless to me too

  12. February 6, 2015 at 9:50 am EDT

So a few things 95% of people can’t realistically afford or need. I was curious about this lens,,,not anymore!

  15. February 6, 2015 at 12:59 pm EDT

For those who want to purchase locally, Farr’s will have them in stock at the same price as B&H or Amazon.

  16. February 6, 2015 at 1:03 pm EDT

I get the market for these, but I’m not it. I’ve got a 5DmkIII and my challenge is more DR. I just don’t have the “I’ve run out of pixels” blues very often. Waiting on DPreview’s test

  17. February 6, 2015 at 1:39 pm EDT

Says these cameras will have the same DR as the mark 3…canon sucks..stoked to see what the sony a7r 2 ….come out

  18. February 6, 2015 at 2:05 pm EDT

    Jmk bro

  19. February 6, 2015 at 2:21 pm EDT

  20. February 6, 2015 at 2:42 pm EDT

Still waiting for the 5D Mark IV

  21. February 6, 2015 at 3:13 pm EDT

Does this mean the price of the 5Dm3 is gonna drop??

    1. February 6, 2015 at 4:31 pm EDT

It has been the same forever, don’t expect it to drop, and expect the 5D4 to be ridiculously prices as usual.

  22. February 6, 2015 at 4:19 pm EDT

The lens NOT being a f/2.8 for that price is ridiculous.

  23. February 6, 2015 at 5:24 pm EDT

The prices are the same at Kenmore Camera, kenmorecamera.com

  24. February 6, 2015 at 6:27 pm EDT

Hmm why would you want something higher then 12000? That is why they make tripods….

  25. February 6, 2015 at 6:30 pm EDT

Come on with the 5D IV !!!!!

  26. February 6, 2015 at 6:37 pm EDT

Perfectly happy with my new 7D Mark II

  27. February 6, 2015 at 7:24 pm EDT

So $3,000 for the 11-24/f4 and $3,900 for the ‘R’ body. Hmmm almost $7,000 for optimum 50MP landscape images….. NA… I’ll stick with my 5D3 and get the new Tamron 15-30 lens and save about $6,000

    1. Don
      February 6, 2015 at 8:29 pm EDT

The Canon 16-35 f4 IS L, which costs a little over $1000, is a spectacular landscape lens to pair with the 5D III.

  28. February 6, 2015 at 7:33 pm EDT

canon, Canon CANON!!! WTH are you doing? Are you NOT listening to what your consumers are asking for? Someone at your organization must read these posts. I find it hard to believe that the Japanese are NOT cognizant of our concerns. I predict in the very near future Sony will surpass you in sales. They’re already making more innovative strives in their cameras. It’s obvious that NIKON now reigns supreme. As an avid Canonite, previous owner of the original digital Rebel $999.00, (2) 20D’s, (2) 30D’s, (2) 40D’s, 50D, 7D, (2) 5D’s, 5DMKII and a 5DMKIII as well as numerous lens from the lens line-up (Luxury), I’ve earned the right to complain……a little. Not to mention numerous accessories with all this shit! And I still have MOST if not ALL of my receipts for all of my gear. Yes I am an admitted Canon Hoarder. But at this point I’m ready to jump ship and trade it all in for some Nikon or Sony gear. #myloyaltycomesataprice
