Unfortunately the upcoming rebate change on January 2nd is extensive, and not a change for the better. If you’re looking to purchase a Canon camera, lens, or flash: the time is now. We now have the full details: 23 lenses, several cameras, and all printer bundles will see their rebate reduced or eliminated altogether.
Here is a run-down of all the items that will have their rebates reduced or eliminated.
Printer Bundle Deals Increasing in Price
We’re told that the printer bundle deals will not be available after January 2nd, at current pricing.
- EOS 5D Mark III + PIXMA PRO-100 for $2149.00 AR at B&H
- EOS 5D Mark III + 24-105L + PIXMA PRO-100 for $2749.00 AR at Profeel
- EOS 6D + PIXMA PRO-100 for $1099.99 AR at B&H
- EOS 6D + 24-105L + PIXMA PRO-100 for $1649.95 AR at Profeel
- EOS 7D Mark II + PIXMA PRO-100 for $1049.00 AR at B&H
- EOS 70D + PIXMA PRO-100 for $679.00 AR at B&H
Cameras with Reduced Instant Savings — Effective Price Increase
We’re told the EOS 7D Mark II, EOS 70D, EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R will have their instant savings reduced.
Also, the instant rebate on the EOS M3 will be reduced. Right now you can get the EOS M3 and EVF-DC1 Electronic Viewfinder for only $448.98 at B&H. Click here, then click “Build Bundle” (under the price box), then select the bundle with the EVF-DC1. This will be more expensive after Saturday.
Lenses with Reduced Instant Savings — Effective Price Increase
Sadly, we will see a reduction in instant savings on the below 23 lenses and 3 flashes, which translates to an effective price increase. If you’re coveting a lens on this list, we highly recommend you take advantage of the current pricing prior to the price change on January 2nd. Most items will see either a $50 or $100 price increase. Historically, the next opportunity for big savings will be in the Spring (typically around April/May). You can check out the full list of current instant savings at B&H.

@Vy Nguyen
Will this affect the refurbish prices as well?
No — refurbished prices are pegged at 80% of the before-instant-savings MAP price, so instant savings changes don’t affect refurbished prices. There is, however, currently a 15%-off refurbished lenses sale which will expire on January 2nd.
I have a feeling the price would climb down if the economy keeps tanking. I was told by a Wall Streeter that the flow of info at his bank is suggesting that the holiday season sales had not been “comfortable”. Also as spring approaches the major brands would be getting ready for the summer introduction of new bodies and lens. They need to clear the shelves off some of the bodies to make way for the new bodies. We shall see.
Canon does nothing that makes any sense.
If I were to purchase one of the bundles with a rebate, could I do so on January 1st and still get the rebate?
Thanks! Love this site!
Yes, it’s possible, but please note many of the camera stores close early on Fridays, so you will want to order Friday morning to be safe.
This is also assuming that the retailers don’t raise their prices before Saturday.
70-200 2.8 II IS not on list. Good
John Wright u seeing this?
Sadly I’m not looking to get any gear at the moment. I want to see what the 1DX Mark II looks like before I pick up a new camera body.
Makes sense. 🙂
With CES around the corner, we can expect “new” product announcement and “old” will be in sale. 6D, 5Dm3 could go lower.
Even though lots of new product announcements are coming, it’s a common fallacy that this will immediately result in fire-sales on “old” models (such as 5D Mark III / 6D).
Canon’s likely seen the drop in sales for the older bodies and has been curtailing production of these older bodies for months. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the 5D Mark III production has already been diverted to making 5Ds/5DsR (which shares the same body and likely most of the same manufacturing process.) Like all manufacturers Canon is trying to build cameras “just in time” for demand.
As a rule of thumb, we typically see cameras (and lenses!) drop to about half the introduction price of its successor. This is a pattern we’ve seen the with 5D Mark II, 7D, 24-70 v1, 70-200 v1, 100-400 v1, and others. Remember, this is a controlled price descent by Canon — they would rather cut production than to see the price (and thus their brand value) drop too far. Also, a high price on the older products justifies the higher introduction price of the camera. Who would buy a 5D Mark IV at $3800 when the 5D Mark III is $1250?
So yes, we’ll see a price drop when new bodies are announced, but we expect it to be quite moderated and we don’t expect it to be earth-shattering at all.
Awesome, business focused explanation!
what about the 5ds r? I am seriously thinking of ordering one tomorrow
According to the official list I saw, the 5DsR has its $300 instant savings expiring. This one baffles me because it’s already so uncompetitive in price, even with the rebate. Perhaps for the 5Ds/5DsR the rebate is being replaced with a permanent price drop? Here’s to hoping…
what is adorama’s price match policy?
It’s a case-by-case basis, but typically you get an Adorama store credit for the difference. Have you taken a look at our street price program yet?
not within 30 days, Adorama has a sure mic plus $359 in rewards
S-i-g-h … I’m hoping a 70D is in my future. 🙂
70D instant rebate is also decreasing by $100. I’d suggest going with the 70D printer bundle at B&H while you still can. http://www.canonpricewatch.com/go/70D-Bundle/b=61009
Right now I’m a bit short … like about $1,000 — hahaha.

you’re welcome!
oh thank you :'(
What about the Canon 5d mark 3 just the body? I looked on the website and they still list the special as ending Jan 2 even though it’s not on the list!!
5D Mark III instant savings will be renewed at current level ($300) for the next month.
Thanks for this money saving tip. I’ll pull the trigger.
